Acne is a skin condition that arises when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It usually results in whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples. Acne generally appears on the face, forehead, shoulders, chest, and upper back. Many factors contribute to the arousal of Acne but, the two main factors which intensify this condition are hormonal changes and an unhealthy diet. Let’s take a more in-depth look at both factors.

Acne due to hormonal changes

What is hormonal acne, and how it affects the skin?

Acne associated with the fluctuations in your hormones is known as hormonal acne. Typically associated with hormonal changes during puberty, hormonal acne can affect adults of any age. Acne due to hormonal change is especially common in women. Menstruation and menopause are among the common factors contributing to this. Change in hormones can cause hormonal acne during menstruation, polycystic ovarian syndrome, menopause, and increased androgen levels.

Sebum production is increased due to testosterone, which causes thickening of the skin. This leads to pore-blocking and can trigger inflammations.

What is the best treatment for hormonal acne?

Oral contraceptive pill can reduce acne: Estrogen in the contraceptive pill reduces sebum and androgen production, leading to a reduction in inflammation. Contraceptive pills do not show immediate results. It takes around one to three months for these pills to show results.

Isotretinoin may be helpful in treating acne: This vitamin A-based drug stops oil glands from producing too much sebum. It also speeds up the process of removal of dead skin cells, which prevents clogged pores that lead to spots.

Retinoids prevent blockage of pores: These vitamin A based products stop the skin from becoming sticky, which reduces pore blockage preventing blackhead formation.

Acne due to an unhealthy diet

An unhealthy diet can intensify acne.

Diet has a significant effect on the overall health of a person. How can it not affect skin health? An unhealthy diet can trigger acne to a great extent. Below is the list of items to avoid in your diet for acne-free skin.

Fast food can cause acne: Fast foods can intensify acne to a great extent. Oily and decadent processed fried foods can lead to the accumulation of excess oil and can make your skin look unhealthy.

Alcohol is harmful to the skin, as well: Alcohol can cause an imbalance in testosterone or estrogen levels in the body and trigger inflammation. Excessive intake of alcohol results in the deficiency of zinc, which is supposed to be a fighter against acne.

Caffeine may increase your acne: Caffeine not only causes acne but can spread it all over the skin as well. If you want to avoid acne and want clear skin, then you must limit or prevent the intake of drinks that are high in caffeine, such as coffee.

Acne arising due to any of the two factors, hormonal changes, or an unhealthy diet requires proper care and treatment. Cleansing the face and keeping the skin hydrated from within, helps in keeping the acne away.
